If you are considering a change of career then why not train to become a driving instructor. You can work hours which suit yourself and this can be either full time or part time or, if you wish, can be a second career.
The advantages of training with Skipp’s Driving School is that, unlike most Driving Instructor training Establishments, you pay for each lesson/module ‘as you go’. This makes it easier for you to budget as there are no lump sums to pay out except for your books/training materials (as recommended by the DSA)
To be able to train to be an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) you have to satisfy certain criteria as laid down by the Driving Standards agency(DSA)
The qualifying examination comes in three parts:-
PART ONE - THEORY TEST
This test consists of 100 multiple-choice questions split up into four bandings
This test will last 90 minutes and the questions are delivered by a touch screen computer.
After a short break you will take the hazard perception test.
This test consists of 14 video clips which are shown on the computer screen featuring various hazards. You need to respond to these hazards by pressing the mouse button and the earlier you respond the higher your score. You will need to spot 15 hazards and each one carries a maximum score of 5 points.
PASS MARK.
In order to pass the theory test you need to achieve a pass mark of 85% for the theory test with a minimum of 80% correctly answered questions in each banding.
For the hazard perception test you need to score 57 points. The maximum possible score is 75 points.
THERE IS NO RESTRICTION ON THE NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS THAT YOU MAY HAVE AT THE PART ONE TEST.
PART TWO - DRIVING ABILITY
This test consists of an eyesight test and a test of driving technique.
You must be able to read a car number plate from a distance of 27.5 metres (90 feet) and pass a driving test which is of a more advanced nature than the standard driving test for learners. You need to be able to demonstrate that you have a very high level of competence and that you have a very good knowledge of driving and road safety principles. At the start of the test you will be asked some questions about basic vehicle safety.
In order to be successful at this part of the test you should commit no more than six driving faults and no serious or dangerous faults. The test will last for approximately one hour.
UNLIKE THE PART ONE TEST, YOU WILL ONLY BE ALLOWED THREE ATTEMPTS AT THIS PART OF THE EXAMINATION PROCESS
ONCE YOU HAVE PASSED YOUR PART TWO TEST YOU HAVE A DECISION TO MAKE.
You can now consider if you want to apply for a trainee license which will allow you to give tuition to pupils and to receive payment. However, there are some conditions attached
The cost of a trainee license is £125.00 and this fee is payable to the DSA
PART THREE - INSTRUCTIONAL ABILITY
This test measures your ability to deliver effective driving tuition.
The test is in two parts and each part will last around 30 minutes. In each part the examiner will assume the role of a pupil and for the first part he will play the part of a novice pupil and for the second part a pupil who is at test standard.
For each part, the examiner will select a pre-set test for you to complete and you will be assessed on how effective your teaching method is.
After the test the examiner will give you the results of your test and tell you if you have been successful and offer you the opportunity of a de-briefing.
AS WITH THE PART TWO TEST, YOU ARE ONLY ALLOWED THREE ATTEMPTS AT PART THREE.
Test Fees
Part One - £75.00
Part Two - £85.00
Part Three - £85.00
These fees are payable to the DSA
OUR TRAINING COURSES
Part One Training
This course is designed to be a home study course and consists of an introductory module and four other modules which should completely prepare you for the Part One Theory Test if used in conjunction with other training materials.
All the additional training books/materials (as recommended by the DSA) will be supplied by us but must be paid for before your course commences.
There is no charge for the introductory module but there is a charge of £30.00 for each of the other modules. As this is a pay-as-you-go course this fee must be paid before the next module is sent to you.
Part Two Training
All your training will be in-car with a qualified ADI and delivered on a one-to-one basis. Unlike other training establishments, we do not require a lump sum payment for this part of your training. Your training will consist of two-hourly sessions to enable to reach the advanced standard required to pass the Part Two test of driving ability. All the training will be delivered in-car and the cost of each session will be £50.00
Part Three Training
As with your part two training, all your training will be delivered in-car by a qualified ADI at a cost of £25.00 per hour but these will normally be 2-hour sessions. Unless you are taking the trainee license option the amount of training you receive will be tailored to your individual needs. At this stage you will need to purchase some additional training materials which must be paid for before your part three course commences.
Refund Policy
If you decide not to continue with the course at any stage, as you have only paid for tuition received, no monies paid will be refunded but no further payment will be due from you. All training materials purchased by you are your property and no refund will be made for these items.
AFTER YOU HAVE QUALIFIED
Once you have qualified you will be offered a place with Skipp’s Driving School, but you will need to provide your own vehicle fitted with dual controls. There are many companies who will lease a car fitted with dual controls to qualified or trainee driving instructors but we will recommend somebody on request.
Alternatively, you may decide to buy you own vehicle and some dealers offer a discount package for driving instructors so it is best to shop around.
You should note that you will need to apply to go on the ADI register and the fee for this is £200.00 payable to the DSA.
