The Theory Test for learners was introduced in 1996 by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to prepare learner drivers for the demands of modern day driving.
Since its introduction the Hazard Perception Test has now been added in order to test the candidate’s ability to react to hazards,
To successfully pass the theory test you need to pass both parts at the same time.
Part One – Multiple Choice
The multiple choice element of the test consists of 50 questions, some of which require more than one answer so it is advisable to read the questions carefully. You have 57 minutes to complete this part of the test and the pass mark is 43 correctly answered questions.
This element is taken on a computer using the touch screen method.
Part Two – Hazard Perception
This element is delivered by video clips shown on a computer screen. You will be shown 14 clips depicting everyday road scenes and each clip will show at least one developing hazard. However, one of the clips will show two developing hazards. You have to indicate that you have spotted the hazard by clicking on the mouse and to achieve a high score you need to respond during the development stage of the hazard. The maximum you can score for each hazard is 5 points and therefore the highest score possible for this test is 75 points. The pass mark for this element is 44 points.
When you have completed both elements of the test you may leave the examination area and you will then be given your result by the test centre staff. If you have been successful you will be issued with a certificate which is valid for 2 years.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL YOU HAVE PASSED YOUR THEORY TEST TO TAKE DRIVING LESSONS
When you attend the Theory Test Centre for your test you will need to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of your test time and take both the photocard licence and the paper counterpart. If you have the old paper driving licence you will need to take another form of ID with you such as a valid passsport or an employer’s ID card.
Your instructor will be able to offer you advice on how to prepare and pass the theory and hazard perception tests and a range of materials are available for you to loan free of charge. You will be asked for a small returnable deposit for each item.
